The legend of the Castello

Every little girl dreams of that fairytale wedding, and what better way to turn fantasy into reality than celebrating your wedding in Malta at this romantic 17th century castle set in lush gardens and surrounded by tranquil country scenes on the outskirts of a picturesque traditional Maltese village.

The Castello was built by the wealthy Baron Bernardo, built in Norman style in 1675. It was used to guard
against sudden raids by Corsairs, as indicated by the four unusual guard turrets adorning its façade.
According to local legend, Lucia, the only daughter of the Baron, disappeared from her bedroom on
the morning of her wedding to a wealthy Sicilian count, some 300 years ago.
Believing that Lucia had been abducted by Corsairs the Baron mounted an armed search of Gnejna Bay,
which proved futile. One year later, the bells of a local church started tolling unexpectedly,
and a vision of the missing Lucia, clad in a nun's habit appeared before the altar.
She told the villagers that she had run away from home to avoid marrying the elderly Count and,
having taken nun's vows, had spent the past year tending to the wounded in a foreign land until she was killed by a stray arrow.

Today, the Castello has a much more festive and joyous role and provides a perfect setting for that unique wedding abroad. Mouth watering food, fine wines with a good measure of high-class service, all the important ingredient for a wedding day to remember. An excellent location for late night "After Party" since the Castello is surrounded by fields and has no noise restrictions.

Your wedding in Malta can have just the same dose of magic as that of your childhood dreams.

Villa in Balzan

A charming, elegant and welcoming 18th century Maltese country house, still lived in by successors of the family that built it in 1745.
explore-villa-overview

There’s something wonderful about a Mediterranean garden wedding and in this romantic and magical setting, tying the knot will be everything you have dreamed of. A wedding here promises everything your heart desires – sprawling gardens that can be decorated and tailored to suit the size and requirements of your special day, a photogenic backdrop with historic architectural touches, and a back-up indoor option that ensures you’ll enjoy peace of mind whatever happens.

Within the walls of this estate you will discover a world far removed from the bustle of Malta’s tourist traffic. Visitors here can enjoy the historic garden, where centuries-old citrus orchards, majestic fountains and luscious lawns provide a perfect setting for one of Malta’s finest baroque villas. The main villa and front garden were built in 1745 by Fabrizio Grech as a wedding present for his daughter who was married in April of that year. Fabrizio Grech was a senior advisor to Grand Master Pinto and from that position derived significant influence and wealth. In the 1920s a new façade was added to the back of the villa and the gardens were extended. The Dolphin Fountain, Sunken Pond, vegetable gardens and cactus garden all date from this period, and are here for you to enjoy.

Although grand in scale, this manor is informal and welcoming. We know that you and your wedding guests will not only be in awe of such exquisite surroundings but we hope you will enjoy exploring these magical gardens and sharing in the atmosphere of a much-loved family home.
